Latin America is a region rich in history, culture, and modern tourist attractions. It is defined as the region where two of the five Romance languages, i.e., Spanish and Portuguese, are spoken by the majority.

The region is made up by virtually the entire South and Central America, as well as a few Caribbean islands. This total region covers approx. 19,197,000 sq km (7,412,000 sq mi), and houses about 600 million people. It lies either side of the Equator, but entirely in the Western Hemisphere.

This region owes its name to European imperialism, and was part of some of the most influential and [largest empires in human history](//historyplex.com/greatest-empires-in-history-of-world). Much of South America and Mexico were an important part of the Spanish Empire, whereas Brazil was the most important overseas asset of the Portuguese Empire. The countries in this region started to break free of their European rulers in the 19th century, with Mexico and Brazil leading the way by declaring independence from the ailing Portuguese and Spanish empires in 1821 and 1822, respectively.
